VMware Cuts Prices for SMBs

Faced with competing against Microsoft’s theoretically free virtualization, VMware Thursday cut the $995 list price of its entry-level vSphere Essentials package in half to $495 until June 15 in an appeal to small businesses. vSphere Essentials targets sites with less than 20 physical servers and lacks such things VMotion live migration of virtual machines or support. Users can virtualize three physical servers to consolidate and manage applications in the name of reducing hardware and operating costs.

Posted a new article last night on configuring BIG-IP LTM VE In a VMWare Team environment with servers (DevCentral login required) and just wanted to let you all know. It’s a relatively complex topic, considering that the pieces all work well separately, but if you’ve configured networks in VMWare before it isn’t too bad to get going. I chose CENT-OS as the server OS because then if any of you decide you want to toy with the team, you can email me and I’ll get you a copy somehow. You’ll need VMWare, and a license key for the BIG-IP VM, but otherwise you should be able to mess with it as-is. I prefer though that you use the article, which tells you how to set up the same environment, so if you’ve already got BIG-IP LTM VE and VMWare, just follow the steps.

True, I’ve had no qualms in showing my skepticism towards the marketing of ‘cloud computing’ and it being the mere repackaging of solutions which have existed for years, but the fact is it still addresses a concept and reality that exists and one which holds numerous benefits. Indeed abandoning an existing on site IT infrastructure for a cloud provider that most often or not can’t offer the same level of security, control or performance is not an easy decision but one which CIOs and IT executives are seriously considering when weighing up the economic benefits. As with any change though, a move towards the cloud necessitates a sound and comprehensive assessment to avoid the trap of a short term benefit turning into a long term nightmare.

There have been many a post about LTM VE over the past few weeks, many of them very cool, but Don took a slightly different angle by showing you how to set up a VMware team so you can spin up and down your entire test team (VE, client, server) with the push of a single button. Pretty neat stuff. Not only that, but he goes into enough detail with screenshots and step by step instructions that you should be able to re-create the environment pretty easily if you're still looking for a way to get up and running with your VE deployment. Whether you were waiting for the right walk-through on setting up LTM VE to come along or you're just interested in seeing yet another way of doing things, this article was a goodie.

He then goes onto give us an extensive list of the different information these systems are going to be made to handle in the soon to come resolution to this technological tease wherein we'll finally get to see the results of his testing, his analysis of the options, and some fun charts. Despite the title Lori does not go on to talk about carpentry or construction. Instead she fills us in on her take on Carr's analogy and why the "pay as you use" model is really more like a "pay for the minimum required in CASE you need it" model. It's not a negative slant on things, just realistic, to remember that there is an inherent cost in things that have to be running before requests actually come in. To fool ourselves into thinking that we're paying only for what we use, like electricity, when we're paying a set cost just to have the resources available when needed is..well..just that, fooling ourselves. I like her points here and thought it was worth passing on. The cloud can be awesome and effective and even cheap for many people, but don't get caught off-guard thinking it's going to be free until you need it while really being billed.

Thin Client Computing Could Save Small Businesses Thousands in IT Costs

Small businesses in the UK could be savings thousands of pounds in IT costs and management time by switching from their traditional computers to thin clients, according to research from IGEL Technology. A small company with five PC users could save £2,300 over the first three years and more than £6,000 over a 6 year period - the typical life of a thin client. Annual costs per workstation below £600 Instead of conventional PCs with their own locally installed software ("fat clients"), employees would use small thin client devices, which look just like a small PC but run their software from a central server. This Virtual Desktop Infrastructure means that staff can still do all the same tasks as with their old PC but the running and maintenance costs are significantly reduced. When distributed over six years, the costs for this kind of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) with five thin client workstations - including monitors, printer, keyboards and mice - comes to only £596 annually. In contrast, a comparable workstation in a conventional PC environment would cost around £800 per year. What's more, in purely Linux-based systems (no cost for Windows® licenses), the annual per-workstation savings increase by almost another £100.

In the networking side of the world, vendors often seek to differentiate their solutions not just based on features and functionality, but on form-factor, as well. Using a descriptor to impart an understanding of the deployment form-factor of a particular solution has always been quite common: appliance, hardware, platform, etc... Sometimes these terms come from analysts, other times they come from vendors themselves. Regardless of where they originate, they quickly propagate and unfortunately often do so without the benefit of a clear definition. A reader recently asked a question that reminded me that we've done just that as we cloud computing and virtualization creep into our vernacular. Quite simply the question was, "What's the definition of a Soft ADC and vADC?" That's actually an interesting question as it's more broadly applicable than just to ADCs. For example, the last several years we've been hearing about "Soft WOC (WAN Optimization Controller)" in addition to just plain old WOC and the definition of Soft WOC is very similar to Soft ADC. New mid-range appliance SSL-1060 and spike licensing
The new StoneGate SSL-1060 appliance comes with the latest StoneGate SSL 1.4 software version, offering new features with respect to network integration and end point security such as the ability to configure port forwarding configurations and Ticket Single Sign On (SSO) enhancements.

The SSL-1060 appliance is designed for companies who need to provide a user base of 50 to 500 users with secure, authenticated remote access to business applications while ensuring best performance at all times.

Stonesoft introduces Spike licensing to all SSL VPN appliances. Spike licenses are temporary licenses used for increasing the number of users in emergency situations. For example, a second wave of H1N1 swine flu might keep employees at home or a nearby river flooding the office might prevent them from working there. In such cases, the ability to quickly increase the number of remote users becomes business-critical.
